Understanding family balancing

Family balancing typically involves in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).

After egg retrieval, our experts fertilize the eggs with sperm in our lab to create embryos. After around three to five days, our embryologist precisely removes one cell from each embryo. These cell samples go to our genetics lab for immediate evaluation.

This professional analysis can determine the sex of each embryo. PGD can also identify a broad range of chromosomal irregularities. In this way, it can ensure that we select only healthy, viable embryos for implantation while also giving you the option to choose the sex that aligns with your family building goals.

Reasons to consider family balancing

Family balancing needs are highly unique to each parent. Some common reasons to consider it include:

Medical reasons

Certain genetic conditions, such as hemophilia or Duchenne muscular dystrophy, are linked to specific genders. If your genetics point to an elevated risk for your future children, gender selection can help.

It allows you to select an embryo without those genetic markers. For example, parents with hemophilia or a family history of it may opt for female embryos, as it’s extremely rare in girls.

Personal preferences

Many factors play into gender preferences, from personal desires to cultural values, religion, and parent history. If you have a strong personal preference for one sex or the other, PGD can allow you to realize your dreams.

At Fertility & Gynecology Center - Monterey Bay IVF, we believe that your personal wishes deserve respect and compassion, free from judgment. No matter what your reasons for having a preference for a boy or girl, we’re here to support you.

Family planning

Many parents desire more control over family planning. For example, a parent might already have a girl (or several) and want a boy, or vice-versa.

You deserve to plan your family the way that makes sense to you, and family balancing allows you to do that. PGD can give you greater control over the family-building process to help you shape the family of your dreams.
